Savage Claims N-S Title in 40 Holes

Matt Savage outlasted Jamie Lovemark in a marathon match in the finals of the 108th North and South Men’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 today (Sunday). Savage, who plays at Florida State, rolled in a birdie putt on the 40th hole of what was scheduled as a 36-hole championship to defeat Lovemark. Lovemark entered the match play as the No. 2 seed on the strength of taking medalist honors in the two-day qualifying. Lovemark also used some strong putting to stay in the match, rolling in an 18-foot birdie putt on the 36th hole to force the extra holes.
